Chapter Six

Playful screeches originated from the living room. The piercing octaves tumbled down the hall like somersaults toward Marly and into the cavern of her ear canal. She groaned, propping herself over the second cup of coffee Monica had poured.

“Jackie! Jaz! Why don’t you two run around outside?” Monica screamed to the girls as she sat beside Marly in the kitchen. The slam of a screen door confirmed they had taken the suggestion.

Marly attempted to sit up straight. The contents in her stomach swirled like a whirlpool. Her body reacted as if she was out on a boat deck in the middle of a choppy sea. Her brain beat against her skull. Another groan escaped her lips, pitiful and pleading. “How is you yelling at them helping?”

“You’ve got to stop drinking so much.” Monica clamped a hand over her sister’s. She leaned in and whispered. “Does Jasmine see you like this a lot?”

Marly recoiled her hand from Monica’s grip. “The wine was stronger than I thought. That’s all.”

“Marly...” Monica began again.

She sighed in return. “I don’t do it every night.”

“That’s what Dad would say.” Monica sipped her coffee.

“I don’t feel like rehashing your long-distance concerns about how Dad took care of himself. This is not the time.”

Monica’s mug settled onto the wooden table with a hard thud. “Maybe you should take Jasmine home then since I was under the assumption you wanted to talk.”

A dirty workshop towel waved about in the kitchen doorway. “Is it safe to come in and grab a beer, ladies?” Gary’s voice wafted in from around the corner, controlled and deadpan.

“Yes, sweetie,” Monica mumbled.

“I’ll be out of your hair. Needed a break from the car repair.” Gary marched in with purpose toward the refrigerator. The door swung open. Various items clanged about the interior with the force of Gary’s tug. A cap popped. After a large gulp and a satisfying “Ah,” Gary closed the refrigerator. “Your car should be working by this afternoon, honey.”

Monica clapped softly. “Just in the nick of time, too, with that new client. She’s got me running around for a specific seersucker pattern for curtains that she insists need to be put up before we start filming.”

“Since when are you in charge of set design, too?”

Monica waved her hands about like a magician. “It’s all about the illusion. Most of the stuff with Daniel and Vanessa’s videos wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t pushed. And now”—she waved her hand in front of Marly—“look where we are.”

Marly looked around, realizing Gary had disappeared. Quite the trick.

“You’ve changed the subject. Don’t think I didn’t notice.”

“I know you are only asking because you’re worried. I’m sorry for snapping.”

“What happened last night?”

“Well, it turns out, the Johnsons — and you can’t mention this to anyone — are swingers.” Marly nodded when Monica’s mouth dropped open. “Yep. I was the last one to get the memo, apparently. Turns out Jack knew and planned the whole thing for Jasmine to call and get me out of there.”

“Oh my God, did he tell Jasmine that they.
